With the end of Watches & Wonders in April, the new models of major brands in the first half of the year have almost been exposed. Among the vast sea of new models, which models are the most noteworthy? The most surprising? Even the most desirable? Eric, editor-in-chief of Horoguides, once again visited many watch experts. The new models worth noting include the 5711 green dial, which is very popular but not the price, the Cartier Tank Must, which is popular among both men and women, and the pistachio green, which is very popular this year… Buyers talk about the highlights of the watch exhibition in their minds.
Q: What is your favorite watch?
Chris:
My favorite new watch is the new Patek Philippe Golden Eagle 5711. The olive green dial is very attractive, but don’t mention the price, it’s really outrageous. The second place is Vacheron Constantin. The platinum American 1921 is great. I tried it on in the store. It’s a very beautiful watch. The most special one is the platinum version. It should be a limited edition watch. I think it should be 100 pieces. The sandblasted platinum dial is so beautiful.
Morgan:
My favorite watch, I think, is the HUBLOT Big Bang Tourbillon, which is made of all sapphire crystal. They made 30 pieces. The case, dial, and bracelet are all made of sapphire crystal. It costs 440,000 US dollars, but it’s the price that makes people say, “Oh~ Are you crazy?” This is my favorite watch. The price is not important, but the watch is very beautiful. The tourbillon is very beautiful. HUBLOT did a good job!
In addition, I like the TUDOR Black Bay chronograph. The chronograph is my favorite. We originally guessed that Daytona would come out, but it was Rolex’s little brother Tudor that came out. It is 41 mm. I like it. It seems to pay tribute to the antique watch 6263. The panda and reverse panda, the black bezel is very beautiful, and there is also a date. ROLEX’s little brother is really naughty, I like it.
Joe:
There are several watches I like in this year’s Watches And Wonders. The first one that comes to my mind is Lange’s Lange 1 perpetual calendar. Why do I like this one? Because it is super cool. Lange 1 has a large date, which should be the most suitable for a perpetual calendar. However, Lange has never had any perpetual calendar since 1994, so this year they made a brand new movement and a perpetual calendar. It is actually very, very easy to read. If you look at the dial, whether you want to see the day, date, or month, it is clear. There are two rose gold and white gold. The white gold is a limited edition of 150 pieces. The white gold is a bit like salmon noodles, which is very good.
The second one is the limited edition Octo Finissimo by Tadao Ando of Bulgari. I call it “Mirror Flower and Water Moon”. Why? Because this watch is so cool. Tadao Ando designed a black ceramic case, which means it is dark at night, and the dial is blue. The first model he designed before had a water wave pattern on the dial. This “Mirror Flower and Water Moon” is when the moon is hanging in the sky at night, and the reflection is on the lake with ripples on the dial, as if you can see the reflection of the moon on the lakeshore. I think it is really beautiful.
Balazs:
My favorite watch is Lange 1 perpetual calendar salmon face, this is one; another one I think is very good is Cartier’s Tank Must, with beautiful colors and simple design. My wife and I can wear it together. It is really a very good watch. Maybe I will give my wife blue or burgundy.
Sahil:
I think I will follow the trend this time and talk about 5711. I like its green dial. I like that it reproduces classic elements, such as date and fonts. Green dial is a hot topic in the market now. Although almost all brands have green dial models, the green dial model of 5711 is indeed successful. I am not a super VIP of Patek Philippe, so I have not had the opportunity to try it in the store. Maybe I will have the opportunity to try it in a few years. Other models, such as Rolex’s 36mm Explorer, are very classic, and I like classics. Reproducing the 36mm size is actually an interesting decision. You also know that the size of contemporary watches has become larger and larger since the 1950s, although there are also special counter-examples such as Panerai, which has shrunk from the original 47mm large size to a bunch of 42mm small size models now, so I think this is a very interesting trend, which is why I think this watch is great. It is very surprising.
Frank:
What surprised me this time was the IWC Big Pilot, which was reduced from 46mm to 43mm, so that more consumers can handle this size. In addition, it has a transparent back design on the pilot watch, which looks more attractive. The second one should be the Breitling Premier B15 manual winding movement with double split-seconds, which directly injects some of the spirit of mechanical watches and the beauty of manual winding movements into this watch.
Gyula:
My favorite watch is the Arnold And Son moon phase watch, which is really a beautiful and practical watch. I know this is a relatively unpopular brand in this watch exhibition, but I like its design, so I want to try it on. The second one I think should be the Breitling and SPEAKEMARINE pistachio color models, both of which are very beautiful. I think this is very trendy and original. Everyone will like it, so I think it is very cool.
Q: Crazy watch
Morgan:
Of course you also know that I like Rolex, so I want to talk about Rolex. Their palm leaf and fluted dial Datejust 36mm is quite special… Some people like it, some don’t, but I think it’s a nice surprise, right? You didn’t expect it to come out, just like the half-gold Explorer. When you see it, you will think: What is this? Very interesting! Very Rolex! Compared with Tudor, Rolex is cheaper. They do whatever they want, but Rolex is more conservative. They plan before they do it. I think they should have done market research first. The current marketing is for the East Asian market. The customer base there also likes half-gold. For example, in the Philippines and China, half-gold is very popular and elegant. In addition, people are gradually liking small sizes now, so Boy Size is very good. It is also a size suitable for women, and it is a size for everyone. In the past, in the 1940s and 1950s, watches were 36-38 mm, and gradually grew to 44 mm, like the super-large Panerai, but now everyone wants to return to the classics, just like clothes, popular things, and trends change every 20 to 30 years, and 36 mm will be the next trend. So don’t throw away your 36mm watch, keep it, and also keep your 34mm watch, it will come back in fashion, we just need to know this.
Chris:
Crazy watch? I think the new Tudor Black Bay silver diving watch is really good, it’s a great watch, it surprised me, and it’s definitely a watch I want to buy. I also saw one or two people wearing it at the Red Bar party today, congratulations to them, it’s a very good new design.
Joe:
We know that Jaeger-LeCoultre is famous for its movement, and there are a lot of patents for the movement, but they may not have released many complex function watches in recent years, just some old watches, no new movements, so I think the craziest this year is their four-sided Reverso, four-sided! I don’t know how to say it in English, anyway, it’s the Reverso with four sides, the cool thing is that it has a perpetual calendar, a minute repeater and a flying tourbillon, because it is a flip watch, there are other calendar displays inside.
Balazs:
This Jaeger-LeCoultre watch has 11 complications in total, which is the most complicated Reverso that Jaeger-LeCoultre has ever released. The most amazing thing is that the case of the Reverso can be flipped over, which is also very complicated. It’s crazy that it can be so amazing! I really like this year’s new four-faced Reverso watch from Jaeger-LeCoultre. I just talked to a watch friend there about how they squeezed so many functions into a small case and made it work properly. It’s unattainable, after all, there are only 10 of them.
Gyula:
The biggest surprise is Cartier’s solar watch. It was a very wise decision to launch this work. It is a very cool watch for men or women. I like its practicality and originality. The surprise is that I didn’t expect Cartier to launch a solar watch. It is definitely the most surprising one. I like it very much.
Frank:
I think the ORIS self-made movement bear is really well designed. It infuses the spirit of the brand into the movement. In fact, if a watch factory can put something like this in it, it is actually a very meaningful and symbolic self-made movement, because few people can infuse the symbol of the brand into the movement.
Q: What watch do you wear today?
Chris:
Today I am wearing a new watch, NWA (#newwatchalert), which I just got today. It is a Panerai Submersible 47mm PAM1305. You know I love diving watches. I changed it to a very special limited edition strap. It was originally supposed to be a strap for another model, but Panerai was very good to me and gave me this strap.
Balazs:
Today I am wearing a Lange 1815 chronograph, rose gold with a black dial, which is my favorite color combination among Lange watches, and a pin buckle ostrich leather strap. If I can wear it the other way around, I would actually like to do that. I just told them inside, sorry, although this is my own watch, I want to look at it carefully with a magnifying glass, because I really like to appreciate it this way.
Joe:
The watch I am wearing today is KURONO TOKYO’s Mori, which is their anniversary watch launched on their first anniversary. Mori means “forest” in Japanese, so it just matches the green face. Since Watches And Wonders has green face watches, I will wear a green face watch. The second watch I am wearing today is Reverso. This year is 2021. Reverso was first released in 1931. The watch on my hand is a replica of that year. This is a replica of the 80th anniversary launched in 2011. Moreover, this year is the 90th anniversary of Reverso, so I am wearing it. 1931 watch.
Sahil:
Today I am wearing Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 15300, which was discontinued in 2011. I bought it the year before last. The certificate is a 2010 watch. This is the watch I have always liked since I started liking the Royal Oak series, especially the 15300. I like its 39mm size, lock-in crown and central second hand. After this model was discontinued, it was replaced by 41mm or 37mm models, but these two sizes are not suitable for me, so I am very lucky to get this watch from the watch shop in Taipei.
Morgan:
I always wear two watches, SWATCH Destination Upper Westside on my left hand and SWATCH Destination SOHO on my right hand. They are all quartz watches, but I like chronographs very much. They are very beautiful.
Gyula:
Today I am wearing a watch from an independent brand in Singapore, FEYNMAN. Both of them are their watches, Cove and Eclipse. I think the most special thing is the Roman numerals on the dial, the Arabic numerals, and the Chinese numerals at the position of the small second hand. Putting so many languages together shows that Singapore is a very international country, and that I am also very international in Taiwan, so it is very cool.
