Synonymous with bridges like the River Kwai, Girard-Perregaux has translated architectural necessity into their horological signature, right down to the gold bridge that forms their logo. So when there’s a new release in that particular collection, we sit up and take notice – and the Free Bridge doesn’t disappoint.
This isn’t the classic three gold bridges. This is a starkly modern reinterpretation of Girard-Perregaux’s bridge-based obsession, opting for a sleek, open dial dominated by matte black metalwork on either side, complete with visible screws. The central hour and minute hands (no seconds hand here) are supported by a faceted black bridge that catches the light beautifully.
At 6 o’clock is Girard-Perregaux’s Neo Bridge, an updated take on the watchmaker’s arrow-shaped bridges of the past, while the hour markers around the edge hang off the dial. The end result is one of the most visually dynamic GPs we’ve seen in a while (ok, it’s not made of sapphire), and one that’s more forward-thinking than most.
Inside the 44mm stainless steel case is the automatic GP01800-1170 movement – as all GP movements are made of, of course – which uses a lot of silicon throughout the balance wheel and has a solid 54-hour power reserve. Even more interestingly, the whole thing is blacked out to really hammer home the contemporary angle GP is going for.
Despite being new for 2020, the Free Bridge already has two versions. The first is the standard, non-limited, new collection piece; the other is part of Girard-Perregaux’s cross-collection Infinity line, defined by onyx dials and rose gold bridges across the various watches.
In the Free Bridge Infinity Edition, the rose gold bridges are joined by gold hour markers, and the large strips of brushed metal on either side of the dial are replaced with onyx, which is a darker, richer color. The touch of gold makes it feel more classic GP though.
I personally prefer the standard version, but if you like the mix of glossy rock and gold, the Free Bridge Infinity edition is limited to a relatively generous 88 pieces and is priced at CHF 20,900, while the standard model is priced competitively at CHF 17,500.
