Who is your favorite Bond? Roger Moore, who used to run around in the circus? The cruel, brooding Daniel Craig, who laments getting older? I mean, the only correct answer is Sean Connery, but everyone has their own answer. One person who might not come to mind is George Lazenby. The youngest Bond ever made just one movie in the franchise, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Avoiding spoilers for readers who haven’t seen it yet, it’s a… fun entry in the 007 canon. Especially the last ten minutes or so. This year also happens to be the 50th anniversary of the movie, which means one thing: an Omega limited edition.
It’s going to be a while before we get to experience Craig’s secret agent swansong, but that hasn’t stopped the makers of the official Bond watch from releasing a watch to commemorate a movie they weren’t actually involved in: the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” 50th Anniversary.
Being a Seamaster 300m, you know what you’re doing here. This solid dive watch meets professional standards, with 300 meters of water resistance, a diving bezel, and the collection’s signature angular look. The focal point, however, is the black PVD and ceramic dial, engraved with a spiral pattern of a 9mm gun barrel, with the bullet at the center.
For contrast, the bullet, hands, and Bond family crest at 12 o’clock are all made of 18K gold. More subtly, if you look at the dial in the dark, you’ll see a little secret on the 10 o’clock index: luminous 50.
The final touch is a gold plaque on the side that denotes the limited edition number, which is, of course, 7,007. Other than that, the watch is essentially the same as the rest of the non-limited collection, with a 42mm stainless steel case and a Master Chronometer-certified caliber 8800 Co-Axial automatic movement. In short, it’s as good a diver as ever.
You might be wondering why Omega chose a movie they weren’t in to honor a Bond that few casual fans remember existed. Honestly, so did we. Still, if you have a 007-shaped aperture in your watch collection, especially if it’s in the shape of an updated version of the Seamaster 300m, this is one of the best-looking Bond limited editions to date.
God knows what Omega would have done for No Time to Die, but if this is the lengths they went to for a 50-year installment movie, it’s pretty impressive.
