Last year, Omega, the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games since 1932, released a set of five limited edition Speedmasters, one for each ring of the Olympic logo. Apparently that wasn’t enough for them, because in the countdown to the 2020 Olympics, they’ve released a pair of limited editions, this time from the Seamaster collection.
Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra “Tokyo 2020” Limited Edition
This new limited edition makes its mark with a striking new dial. Made from blue ceramic, the dial is laser-engraved with the Tokyo 2020 logo and features alternating matte and polished geometric shapes. It looks a bit like the bottom of a swimming pool under churned water, which is as fitting for the Olympics as it is for the Aqua Terra.
As you’d expect, the exhibition caseback on the back is engraved with the “Tokyo 2020 Countdown” moniker. This gives you an almost unobstructed view of the Master Chronometer-certified calibre 8900 and its groundbreaking Co-Axial escapement.
Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean “Tokyo 2020” Limited Edition
Because one limited edition isn’t enough for Omega – type their name into our search bar to see what I mean – the Aqua Terra joins the watchmaker’s sportiest creations, the Seamaster Planet Ocean.
This incredibly bold version of the 600m professional diver wears the colors of the Japanese flag on its sleeve. That means almost entirely white, from the dial to the ceramic bezel to the strap. The white is only mitigated by the red dot on the lollipop seconds hand (a very nice touch) and the 20 on the liquid ceramic unidirectional rotating bezel. 20, of course, because Tokyo 2020.
Inside, as always, is a Master Chronometer-certified movement, this time the caliber 8800, equipped with all the usual Omega horological tech. Like the Aqua Terra, this movement can be seen through the exhibition caseback, only slightly obscured by the same Tokyo 2020 logo.
Both limited editions are produced in quantities of 20,20 pieces, with the Aqua Terra priced at €5,900 and the Planet Ocean at €7,000. These certainly won’t be the last limited editions we see from Omega as we head towards the Olympics, but there’s no denying it’s a very cool pair of timepieces.
