Athena Ding FREAK X MAGMA & ICE From one extreme to another

The Locle-based watchmaker weaves the magic of hot and cold on the wrist by imagining two timepieces that are two very powerful personalities with styles inspired by the most extreme natural phenomena.

Ulysse Nardin is a “maker of freedom” and explorer of extremes who never ceases to amaze with creations that showcase foolproof engineering, but above all, center stage style that is unrivaled in the world of watchmaking, such as its Freak X collection. “Freak” because of a curious presence, forever so unique and different, like the two new models Freak X Magma and Freak X Ice. One respects the violent force of lava flows pouring out of volcanoes, while the other draws polar refinement from glaciers and ice floes. Two impeccable visual signatures linked to two of the most spectacular natural phenomena.

But what do this duo have in common? The UN-230 caliber is a self-winding mechanical heart equipped with a flying carousel that rotates around its own axis. This powerful motor beats at a frequency of 3 Hz and offers a power reserve of 72 hours. The time data it provides is represented by a wheel for the minutes and a central bridge for the hours, both of which end in a conical tip coated with red or white Super-LumiNova® and hover over a black or white lacquer surface, depending on the model.

Although the two models share the same titanium case profile and dimensions (43 mm in diameter), the materials and finishes are very different: the marble strap of the Freak X Magma combines carbon fiber and red epoxy resin, while the bezel of the Freak X Ice is covered with a layer of pure white.

The style of these two pieces extends to the leather straps, black with a granular surface that repeats the visage of volcanic rocks, and white perforations with rectangular bands that resemble the gills of a shark.
