Despite criticism from a small group, Christopher Ward has gone from strength to strength since rebranding in 2016. Focusing on restrained style and vintage-inspired cues, their C65 collection is the embodiment of this design code, and it seems they are winning more than ever.
The latest release in their vintage-inspired collection is the C65 GMT Worldtimer, the first in the C65 collection to include the travel-focused Worldtimer complication.
This apparently wasn’t enough for a direct-to-consumer brand, and they decided to pair the Worldtimer complication with a GMT hand, allowing the wearer to read three time zones at a glance. While the number of people who need this pairing may be small, the execution is flawless, resulting in a unique-looking watch that is easy to use.
The third and final “first” for Christopher Ward is the color scheme, in this case a contemporary yellow and black pairing. Black is used for the outer ring of the bidirectional 24-time zone bezel, the matte dial, and the DLC caseback, while yellow is used to help highlight the night portion of the GMT hand and the outer day/night indicator dial.
While its “glass box” crystal retains some vintage appeal, it’s certainly less retro than other C65 models. That’s not a bad thing, as the pinnacle of this watch is a sporty tool watch that wouldn’t look out of place paired with smart casual workwear or even relaxed streetwear.
Despite being a first, this world timer uses essentially the same base as the rest of the collection, including a slim 41mm stainless steel case, contrasting polished and brushed steel facets, a screw-down crown with a double flag motif, and its signature trident counter-balanced seconds.
The movement is unassuming but solid, the Sellita SW330 boasts a 42-hour power reserve, beats at 4 Hz and features Christopher Ward’s ‘Colimacone’ finished rotor, although in this case it’s hidden behind a screw-down trident-patterned caseback. It doesn’t exactly rewrite the rulebook for travel watches, but it’s a welcome addition.
