Coinciding with the launch of the long-awaited new Defender, Locle and its partner British automaker have designed a watch inspired by the famous SUV.
Whenever two legends meet, each working in their respective fields of preference, the result can only be creative fireworks, such as the new Defy El Primero 21 Land Rover Edition designed by Zenith in conjunction with Land Rover and unveiled during LVMH Watch Week in Dubai. This special edition watch, limited to 250 pieces, coincides, give or take a few days, with the much-anticipated return of the British automaker’s Seguard. In fact, this legendary four-wheel drive, launched in 1980 and renamed in 1990, officially ceased production in 2016 before being relaunched at the end of 2019. While the Defender retains its famous cubic shape, it has now gained some roundness, an ergonomic profile that also characterizes the new timepiece created by Locle.
The watch is equipped with the El Primero 9004 automatic movement, which is equipped with a double escapement – one set to 5 Hz for the “basic” time data function, the other to 50 Hz for the 1/100 thousand chronograph – and offers a 50-hour power reserve. This powerful motor is nestled in a case with a diameter of 44 mm, made from microblasted titanium, whose surface treatment gives it a refined matte appearance. The grey covering the watch is highlighted with a few touches of orange, literally: the small hands on the three triangular subdials (small seconds at 9 o’clock, minute counter at 3 o’clock and seconds at 6 o’clock), on the power reserve indicator at 12 o’clock, the scale running along the flange and the ring around the crown.
To ensure comfortable wearing, Zenith has finished the Defy El Primero 21 Land Rover Edition with a rubber strap decorated with an embossed checkered pattern or a fabric strap decorated with orange stitching, both in grey and closed by a microblasted titanium folding clasp.
