While I think we can all agree that the less said about this year the better, there was only one thing that 2019 was all about (at least in the watch world), stainless steel sports watches with integrated bracelets.
Every passing week seems to bring new members to the ranks of the Sports Luxe. Some foolishly try to draw sales from customers who aren’t prepared to sit on an endless waiting list or pay the premium that’s been asked to buy a Nautilus or Royal Oak, while most try to offer entry-level products with the same charm and appeal, which never ends well.
H. Moser and Cie were late to the party, but when they arrived with the Streamliner Flyback Chronograph, it blew the competition out of the water, offering a design so fresh and modern that it deserves comparisons to Genta’s icons.
The only downside is that it was limited to just 100 pieces, which sold out quickly. However, given the enthusiastic response to this watch, it seems only a matter of time before Moser introduces a new Streamliner model as part of a dedicated collection.
For this second watch, the Streamliner Central Seconds Matrix Green, Moser has done what it does best, it stripped down and simplified, producing a three-hand watch with a single crown, a far cry from the silhouette created by the bull’s-head pushers and the four o’clock crown of the earlier watches. Stripping down the watch in this way only serves to draw more attention to what is probably the most complex case and bracelet design currently in production. You won’t get tired of a watch with so many details, whether it’s the scalloped bracelet, the myriad of finishes, or the gleam of polished metal emanating from the joints of the bracelet links.
The dial is one of those things Moser is known for with its irresistible smoky numerals, this time introducing a new verdant hue, Matrix Green, which fades almost to black at the far end of the dial.
Inside beats the tried-and-true in-house 3Hz HMC 200 automatic movement, with an 18-karat rose gold rotor and a three-day power reserve. It’s a great movement, but a bit anti-climactic considering the sight of the AgenGraph that greets owners of the flyback chronograph.
Still, it’s very encouraging to see how flexible the Streamliner’s particular design is, and it practically guarantees that we’ll be seeing more of Moser’s quirky smash-hit creations.
