French niche mechanical watch navy blue Le Forban Sécurité Mer Malouine

As you might expect, the French Navy is very demanding when it comes to their equipment. Everything they use must not only be fit for purpose, but also best in class, right down to their watches. After all, in military exercises, every second counts. Hence, Le Forban Sécurité Mer made its first appearance on the wrists of the French Navy back in 1969.

More than half a century has passed since then, during which time LFSM has built over 20 different models and, like many of its contemporaries, been lost to the tides of history. That was until last year when the name was resurrected and, more importantly, a new flagship timepiece was launched, rising from the ashes.

With the sleek, militaristic look of its vintage watches, LFSM’s modern resurgence has created the Malouine, a watch directly inspired by the brand’s history. This, of course, means it’s a true tool watch, with a screw-down crown for 150m water resistance and a solid 120-click diving bezel. However, underpinning this practicality is a sense of elegance and vintage charm that most tool watches lack.

The result is an incredibly versatile timepiece, whose 38.5mm size will fit all but the most manly of wrists. It also happens to be incredibly comfortable, a must for a watch you can and will wear anywhere.

Much of the versatility comes from the dial, too. Available in a gorgeous sunburst blue or deep black lacquer, each is paired with a matching bezel, and both feature a silver ring inspired by the 1972 LSFM model. That, combined with the subtle tricolore underneath the Malouine name, makes for an instantly recognisable and inescapably French timepiece.

Crafted with a domed crystal and powered by a reliable Miyota 8215 movement – a classic among high-priced watches – the Malouine is a popular dive watch that has a rich history to its credit.

With so many pieces in Le Forban Sécurité Mer’s horological archive, you can be sure this is just the beginning of a new era for the brand.
