Panerai PAM1661 diving watch 44 mm sandwich dial watch

After relaunching the Luminor Submersible last year, or at least separating it from the rest of the Luminor line, Panerai is now giving the Marina the same treatment, with a new, performance-oriented iteration of the iconic sandwich-dial watch.

Measuring 44mm, the Luminor Marina Carbotech™ is large enough to keep any die-hard Paneristo happy. Otherwise, it’s a bold new take on the Marina, in keeping with last year’s all-black Submersibles.

The first step is Carbotech™ itself, Panerai’s own carbon composite material that creates a light, strong, and subtly textured case. The sandwich dial is all black on top, with a layer of bright blue Luminova underneath, a flash of contrast needed to soften some of the otherwise unremarkable stealth looks. The same combination of black and bright blue can also be seen on the rubber-like strap and its contrast stitching.

This is a proper Panerai Diver, so it can reach depths of 300m, and combined with the lightweight, hard-wearing case, it’s a very practical instrument. It just lacks a proper diving bezel, but if that’s your bag, you can always go for the Submersible.

Inside the new watch is the not-so-new P.9010 movement, which is a mainstay of Panerai’s modern range. And it’s not hard to see why. Not only is the slim automatic movement extremely reliable, it also has a 3-day power reserve to boot.

There’s nothing particularly groundbreaking about the new Luminor Marina – at least in the larger context of the Panerai range – but it’s the perfect midpoint between last year’s Submersibles and the standard Luminor range. It’s wearable, practical and very cool.
