The Overseas has a lot to brag about; Vacheron Constantin’s ode to sporty luxury turned heads when it launched with its distinctive notched bezel and impeccably modern design. It was even a highlight last year when it got a new look with a blue face. This might just be the biggest leap since its launch, though, making the Overseas the contemporary icon it aspires to (and, in our opinion, deserves to) be: the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin Skeleton.
It’s certainly a mouthful, but the base watch was pretty much the key member of last year’s Overseas collection, a very slim yet well laid out perpetual calendar. At 8.1mm thick, it lived up to the “ultra” in the name. Now, Vacheron Constantin is more than happy to show us how they achieved this, via the dial.
Not only has the dial been virtually removed, but the 1120 QPSQ movement itself has been skeletonized to within an inch of its (for want of a better word) life. The result is a glimpse of Vacheron Constantin’s superlative movement architecture and the finishing that goes into it.
The only real downside is that almost all skeletonized watches also fall prey to this. With so much going on, and the various wheels open to the elements (under sapphire, of course), everything becomes a little hard to read. Even the hands can get lost in the mix, which isn’t ideal when you have so many indicators.
Still, it’s easier to read than you’d think, because on the wrist you can clearly see the different layers of the watch. Even if that weren’t the case, there’s certainly a small niche of collectors who would drool over such a cool watch, regardless of whether they can actually tell the time on it.
As a counterpart to the wider Overseas collection, it’s perfect. It’s a final flourish for a collection that already boasts an impressive collection of haute horlogerie complications, which thrives on the more modern aspects of the world’s oldest (continuously operating) manufacture.
