In 2018, Glashütte Original surprised us in the best possible way, abandoning their ultra-traditional German roots in favor of a crazy bright orange dial for the Sixties. Then they introduced a can’t-miss green version last year that was even more eye-catching than before. Now the Sixties is back for its annual show stopper, and what do we have? A grey-blue.
Yeah, yeah, it’s not the crazy brightness we’ve been waiting for, nor is it the crackle, tropical-style finish of previous models. But if you haven’t seen what came before, the Sixties Glacier Blue is still a very good watch indeed.
The dial is the focal point of the Sixties Annual Edition, and it’s just as well made as ever, just in a slightly different way. The dial blank is sunrayed, then given an electro-nickel coating and finished with a dark blue lacquer for a smoky gradient effect. The whole thing is then painted the lighter glacier blue you see in the center of the dial, all before being heated in a kiln to set the color.
The Sixties styling is the same as always, with an elegant 39mm stainless steel case and the sophisticated Calibre 39-52 automatic movement. However, this time around the time-only model is joined by a chronograph.
The Sixties Chronograph is just as elegant, but the 42mm diameter is enough to be considered a sportier model. It features the Calibre 39-47 in-house chronograph movement, but the subdial counters are subtle enough to not detract from the dial. I would still go for the time-only version myself, but the chronograph is still a nice addition.
The Sixties Glacier Blue models aren’t strictly limited editions, but they are only available for a limited time. Whether you’ll be able to snag one before we’re out of quarantine remains to be seen, though.
