Limited editions, bright and playful designs, and a dedicated and obsessive following are common ground between Japanese streetwear giants A Bathing Ape and Swatch. In fact, ever since Bape began their watch collaborations (including one or two with hometown watchmaker Seiko), Swatch has been a kindred spirit.
Now, the duo is exploring their collaborative creative talents once again in three new pieces: Tokyo Black Multi-Camo, Tokyo White Multi-Camo, and Tokyo Grey Multi-Camo.
The base watch is an oversized 47mm Swatch Big Bold in black, white, or grey plastic, very similar to the standard range. It lives up to its name; it’s top-shelf, and if you’re a designer, it’s roomy with plenty of room to work.
In the case of BAPE, that means a lot of their signature camo, though not in their usual greens and browns. Instead, the Tokyo Black and White use yellow and rose gold, respectively, while the Tokyo Grey uses silver. In these cases, the camo is almost subtle.
The same can’t be said for the straps, however, where the same camo pattern is picked out in a bright rainbow of primary colours. The strap also features a BAPE branded ring, as well as Tokyo, the brand’s hometown and the reason for the collection’s name.
Tokyo also makes a splash on the world timeline circle at 12 o’clock, making it the obvious center of the Bape universe, which then incorporates various other cities that inspire their designs.
Funky, fun, and impeccably Bape, these three watches are just a concept to most of us; they’ll be in stock as long as the ice melts in the Sahara.
