Breguet are masters of engine-turned dials. They prove this with the new look of the Classique 7337, showcasing a cornucopia of different techniques on the face of one of their best calendar watches, with two new dials in white and “Breguet blue”.
For those who don’t know what guilloché is, let’s take a quick look. Also known as engine turning it is a decorative technique that uses a rose engine and requires years of training to master even the simplest of patterns. This is not a CNC machine that engraves patterns with the click of a button, but a machine guided by a skilled craftsman that can create a myriad of styles and designs on dials and movement components.
Here, Breguet really flexes their engine-turning muscle by showcasing three different styles on the dial and two more on the movement that is visible through the sapphire caseback.
While these contrasting patterns and designs are very pleasing to the eye, there is also a practical reason behind the grooves and bumps as they help to differentiate between different sections on the dial. Circular grains d’orge (or barley grains) circle the outside of the chapter ring, then more straight up and down Clous de Paris swirls around the center, and finally the damier (or checkerboard) of the small seconds hand dialed down to five o’clock.
All of these patterns allow the eye to easily pick up each section of the dial within the 39mm case. There’s a white dial version with a rose gold case (reference 7337BB/Y5/9VU) and a more modern white gold with a blue dial (reference 7337BR/15/9VU). This may just be an update on the dial from the master watchmakers, but it’s a thing of beauty at a time when I think we could all use a little distraction.
