TALKS – Morgan King’s vintage Rolex and Daytona

Recently, due to the fact that celebrity Shawn Yue filmed a video about the auction of a Rolex Paul Newman Daytona 6263 “RCO” from his collection at Christie’s at the beginning of last year, but the auction ended up failing, everyone has once again turned their attention to this treasure. This time, Eric, the editor-in-chief of “Sunday Reminiscence: Stories about Collections”, invited Morgan King, an international Rolex collector. Morgan, who owns a 6240 RCO, not only talked about his Rolex collection, but also shared with us the 30 Daytona Paul Newmans he once owned, as well as many antique Rolex collections.

The Rolexes in Morgan’s collection are very simple: stainless steel, chronograph function, no diamonds, not precious metals, but they are all rare items that are close to the auction level, such as the 1665 Mk.0 prototype watch that was dug up from the police auction, and the same 6240 that was sold for millions of dollars at Christie’s. If you are a watch fan, his collection of watches will definitely open your eyes; if you are a hardcore collector, you will definitely understand how rare his collection is in addition to its value.

Collecting is a process of evolution
30 Paul Newman watches are only the favorite

“Collecting is a process of evolution. You bought a watch last year because you liked it. You will also buy new watches of the same style you like. Slowly, you will form your own style and start to choose the watches you want according to this style. And eventually you will find out: I bought this watch last year, why didn’t I wear it? This is a sign, a warning, telling me that I must get rid of these watches that I don’t wear.” From 6238, 6239, 6240, 6241, 6262, 6263, 6264, 6265… Morgan’s Paul Newman collection peaked at all stainless steel Paul Newman models, a total of 30, and now he only keeps screw-down crown models.

Experts’ difficult moment of choice
If I only keep one watch: 6240 RCO

“If I only keep one watch, it will be 6240 RCO. This is a very reasonable choice, because if you sell a rare watch, of course you will make money, but the opportunity to encounter a rare model again is rare; but maybe I will keep the first watch in my collection: TAG Heuer F1 Chrono. After all, I am a very loyal person, so even if you can buy it on eBay for 300 or 400 US dollars… Or will I keep my 6265? Chronomat and Speedmaster are also good…”
