When Piaget released the Altiplano Flying Tourbillon back in 2017, it was to celebrate 60 years at the top of the ultra-thin game, and after battling it out with Bulgari for the world’s thinnest automatic watch, they’re still king. Now, the anniversary movement is back with three new limited editions – and it doesn’t look like Piaget will be giving up their crown any time soon.
The Piaget Altiplano Infinite Blue is available in three limited editions that don’t differ too much from each other. All three watches feature a spectacular night sky blue sunburst PVD dial. All three watches feature the same 41mm white gold case, and at the heart of each is the same 670P flying tourbillon movement, with the heart of the movement located at 2 o’clock.
Piaget Altiplano Tourbillon Infinite Blue Limited Edition 38
That movement deserves a paragraph all on its own, so I’m going to give it one. The tourbillon contains 157 different components, all ultra-thin, ultra-light, and interconnected like a plan drawn by MC Escher. Some of them measure the thickness of a human hair, making the otherwise tiny 2.8mm carriage look ungainly by comparison. It’s a feat of horological wonder, and it’s here that it gets the high jewellery treatment it deserves.
Diamonds are plentiful in the three limited editions, but they differ in number and type, with the least embellished of the three limited editions being the 38-piece limited edition. Not only does the centre of the dial sparkle with a diamond-set infinity symbol that surrounds the subdials and tourbillon cage, but the lugs, case, bezel and buckle are all equally glittering, for a total of 135 gems and 2.29 carats.
Piaget Altiplano Tourbillon Infinite Blue Limited Edition 18
The second, rarer limited edition is an 18-piece limited edition (Piaget loves the number 8) and extends the infinity symbol like a ripple across the dial. Likewise, the rest of the watch is pretty sparkly, too, with a total of 276 diamonds and 3.41 carats.
Piaget Altiplano Tourbillon Infinite Blue Limited Edition 8 – Baguette Diamonds
Finally, we come to a piece that makes the other two look ordinary: the 8-piece limited edition. If you weren’t already into the subject, this one has even more extraordinary gems. Not only does it have a total of 386 silly diamonds set across the dial, lugs, bezel, case, and buckle – weighing in at 6.05 carats – but many of them are baguette diamonds. That means a solid line of gems, with no interruptions in the setting.
